What makes a officiant/celebrant-led wedding ceremony different?

Every couple has their own story, personalities, values, quirks, and ideas about what a wedding ceremony should feel like. I don’t start with a generic script and drop your names into it. I get to know you, then create a ceremony that sounds and feels like you — warm, meaningful, sometimes funny, sometimes emotional, and never performative for the sake of tradition.

Celebrant or Officiant — Tomato, Tomahto?

Pretty much, but there is a subtle difference. An officiant is the person who officially conducts your ceremony. As a celebrant I do that too, but I strive for a more personal, story-driven approach to creating the ceremony itself. I use Celebrant/Officiant because I’m both – I take care of the official ceremony stuff, while also creating something that feels warm, personal, and genuinely like you. So whether you call me your celebrant, your officiant, or the person who’s marrying us — we’re talking about the same person.

Am I minister?

Yes. I am a modern metaphysical minister with the Canadian International Metaphysical Ministry. My role is to bring spiritual depth, intention, and meaning to your ceremony in a way that feels authentic to you.

Will our marriage be legally recognized?

Yes. As your licensed BC wedding officiant, I ensure the ceremony meets the legal requirements for marriage as governed by BC Vital Statistics. I’ll also make sure you understand what needs to happen before, during, and after the ceremony so there are no surprises.

How personal can our wedding ceremony be?

Very! Your ceremony can include personal vows, readings, poems, music, stories, humour, family and friends, cultural traditions, meaningful rituals, or spiritual practices. We’ll choose what feels right for you rather than including traditions simply because someone says you’re “supposed to.”

What is your process for creating our wedding ceremony?

It starts with getting to know you. Through our conversations and my couple’s questionnaire, I learn about your relationship, your personalities, what matters to you, and how you want the ceremony to feel. Then I write your ceremony and share it with you so we can shape it together. By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll know the ceremony feels right while still leaving a few lovely moments for you to experience in real time.

Do you travel for weddings, and is there a mileage or travel fee?

Absolutely. I’m based in Nelson, BC, and happily travel throughout the Kootenays and beyond. Travel within 75 km of Nelson is included in all ceremony packages. For weddings farther away, there may be an additional travel fee based on distance, time, and accommodation if needed. I’ll always let you know the cost before you book.

Celebrant or Marriage Commissioner?

Both can legally marry you in British Columbia, the difference is really in the kind of ceremony you’re looking for. If your priority is a simple, straightforward legal ceremony, a Marriage Commissioner may be exactly what you need. We have some great ones here in the Kootenays.

If you want a ceremony built around your love story (one that might include humour, personal vows, family, ritual, meaningful traditions, or simply more space to make the ceremony your own) that’s where a Celebrant comes in. Neither is “better.” They’re just different approaches. The important thing is choosing the person and ceremony style that feels right for the two of you.
